Forty people, interested in Davisville Village’s rich history, came out on a day threatening rain, wind and cold temps to learn more about the neighbourhood we call home.
They were not disappointed. The 90-minute walk, which started at the original J. J. Davis store at the corner of Yonge and Davisville (today a thriving Starbucks), meandered throughout the Village and took in sights as diverse as the Glebe church lands (now the beautiful Belsize area), a home that doubled as a “gentleman’s club” during Prohibition, Davisville School (slated for redevelopment and expansion with the addition of a new Midtown Hub), The Church of the Transfiguration, which is home to a very special native garden created by SERRA member Janet Harrison, and the musical Sharon, Lois & Bram Playground at June Rowlands Park.
We were very pleased to have Councillor Josh Matlow accompany us on our walk.
Many thanks to the Davisville Village Jane’s Walk organizers – amateur historians Amy Isaac and Sharon Mourer – for introducing the Jane’s Walkers to the neighbourhood from their eyes. Next year: we head east of Mt. Pleasant to explore the “Village” leading to Bayview. Join us!
